Beyond Vietnam, the War at Home

Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech called 'Beyond Vietnam.' We read about this in class, does America contradict itself with the supposed values they fight for? What we mean by this is that we always praise about how good democracy is and that it is such a great thing. Every man was born free and was born with liberties and that these liberties should not be taken away no matter your race, class, or gender. Back then they went to several different countries like Vietnam, the Philippines, and Korea to "save them and free them." Or at least that is what they preached but back then at home we had people such as the African Americans whose liberties were limited because of their color. Is America just one huge contradiction?  Are Americans even sure for what they are fighting for? I mean even today we fight over in Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq and we say it's to help the people of these countries, to give them their liberties and yet there are still people back at home in America who are impoverished and are having liberties taken away and not being protected. Nowadays it isn't just the minorities being cheated it is everyone who is out of the political loop. Our leaders are cheating the hardworking Americans by taking more and more from the working class and middle class and giving it to the upper class. The middle class is being diminished the money is being sucked dry from them through their taxes to be given to the people who need welfare while the rich pay less taxes. What sense does that make? I mean to be a politician in this country you have to have a large sum of money or sponsorships from certain corporations who will want you to lobby for their benefits. Does the democratic society where all men and women are equal and given the same opportunities exist or is it just another myth? People must learn to open their eyes and see that only the rich can even become leaders in this nation, from Governors, to Senators, House of Rep., Congress, and Presidents. All are backed by major amounts of money and while they are the 1% they are the 1% that runs the rest of America so who can fight for the middle and working class when they have never had the same experiences and our blind to what they must go through. To them they see nothing wrong but we as middle class and working class families see that this America is not so equal, it is becoming a crippled society with very few remnants of the foundations this nation was built upon. I mean nowadays they have taken the word God out of the Pledge of Allegiance where one of the main foundations for the creation of America was so that they could break away from Britain and be able to read and interpret the Bible for themselves in their own way. It even became one of the contributing factors for the rise of education and now we cannot even have school prayers or anything of that sort. Today they are trying to silence the voices of some Americans by taking away certain access to the Internet or to be able to invade our privacy and monitor what we get on. So is this land so free, is it everything that it was supposed to be, or is this a nation that has lost its way ran by the 1% who are rich in this world who do not pity the things us working class or middle class Americans go through. We have become a society run by corporations and the one percent while the rest begin to suffer from the selfish choices being made in congress, the senate, and political parties. They just want the power and money because that is what makes the world go round whether we like it or not. One of the saddest parts is that men and women who have fought and lost friends and maybe even body parts for these "so called freedoms we possess in America" are treated with little respect. The Veterans come back from these battles, living hells, and what are their rewards? Some do not even have homes to go to, some must live on the streets, they come back to a land where they do not even get to relish in the liberties they were fighting for. Our Veterans, Elderly, Middle class, Working class, and the Poor need to be helped in some way shape or form because if not America will only become less and less of what it is said to be. What can we do to fix this? Is America to far gone to be saved or can we fix ourselves before it is too late? What are some suggestions to save this once great Nation from slipping?
